Description
My Family and I love the Moreton Bay Fig near the tennis courts in Fawkner Park because we can climb it, turn it into a fire station, lookout or house, the other three Figs become other people's houses and we have celebrations, imaginary fires and chat to all kinds of imaginary elves and pixies! We also love the circular BBQ area near this tree, the distribution of the spheres, lawn, sandpit and curved wall has stimulated some excellent games. The curved path lined with foliage near south yarra primary school has become a bunker, I've seen many children as well as my own using the plants in this area creatively! Is there a possibility that the local schools connected to Fawkner park could have some kind of involvement with designing and maintaining a community garden? We would love to see more forward thinking about trees that have the potential to be climbed by future generations and turned into imaginary play spaces. We would also like to see the development of organically inspired plantings of a variety of understory varieties and shrubs at Fawkner park to off set the very linear positioning of trees along the paths and the outer perimeter of the park which would create an even greater sense of retreat from the urban jungle surrounds. We would also like to see more indigenous species planted in local areas to maintain connection with historical biodiversity in the area. We love the birds, give them houses. And perhaps, more information plaques about significant trees, or identification of plant species and wildlife may also help park users to become aware of and connected to the importance and significance of their natural spaces and the creatures who inhabit it. We love our wide open spaces and would love more of them. We are also concerned that housing development is overlooking the need to accommodate green spaces by creating boundary to boundary concrete footprints that do not allow for future revegetation, or the planting of significant trees on private properties as well as on council land.
